Yes, most homes still benefit from a portable air purifier even with a good furnace filter. An HVAC furnace filter cleans air only when the system’s fan is running and is limited to its MERV grade, while a portable HEPA 14 purifier filters the air in your occupied room continuously and to a far higher standard. What does a furnace (HVAC) filter do?

A furnace filter sits in your central heating and cooling system, capturing particles as air passes through — but only while the blower is running. Its job is partly to protect the equipment, and residential systems are usually limited to around MERV 8–13 because higher-MERV filters restrict airflow and can strain the blower. So whole-home filtration is real but intermittent and capped at a MERV grade.

How does that compare to a HEPA 14 air purifier?

A standalone purifier runs on its own schedule in the room you’re actually in, independent of the HVAC. Do both where you can. Running the HVAC fan on “circulate” plus a room purifier gives the most consistent results.
