The Complete Guide to Magnesium Supplement Types

There are over a dozen forms of magnesium available in supplements, each with different bioavailability, therapeutic applications, and side effect profiles. Spectrum 5 by SonoHealth incorporates the five most clinically relevant forms. This guide explains all major forms and helps you understand why the multi-form approach is superior.

Forms Included in Spectrum 5

Magnesium Glycinate

Formed by binding magnesium to glycine (an amino acid). The gold standard for sleep and anxiety supplementation. The glycine component has its own calming neurological effects, making this form doubly effective for mental health and sleep. Highest bioavailability of any form — almost all of the magnesium is absorbed. Does not cause diarrhea at normal doses.

Magnesium Malate

Magnesium bound to malic acid — a key intermediate in the Krebs cycle (cellular energy production). Specifically targeted at energy metabolism and muscle function. Best choice for athletes, people with chronic fatigue, or those with fibromyalgia. High bioavailability, gentle on the stomach.

Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium bound to citric acid. One of the most widely studied and well-absorbed forms. Excellent for everyday supplementation, metabolic health, and mood. At very high doses acts as a laxative (used in colonoscopy prep), but at therapeutic doses is generally well tolerated.

Magnesium Oxide

Contains the highest percentage of elemental magnesium by weight (~60%). Despite lower bioavailability than organic forms, it contributes significant magnesium volume to the formula and is the most studied form for migraine prevention. Pairs well with higher-bioavailability forms in a blend.

Magnesium Hydroxide

The form used in Milk of Magnesia as a laxative/antacid. In the lower doses present in Spectrum 5’s blend (not standalone therapeutic doses), it contributes digestive support without causing diarrhea. Supports bowel regularity and acid neutralization in the GI tract.

Notable Forms Not in Spectrum 5

Magnesium L-Threonate

The only form shown to cross the blood-brain barrier in measurable quantities, making it the preferred choice for cognitive enhancement and neurological applications. More expensive. Spectrum 5 focuses on whole-body support rather than brain-specific supplementation. If cognitive function is your primary goal, consider combining Spectrum 5 with a separate L-threonate supplement.

Magnesium Bisglycinate

Functionally very similar to glycinate — essentially the same compound. Some formulations call glycinate “bisglycinate” to indicate two glycine molecules are bound. The effects are virtually identical.

Magnesium Taurate

Magnesium bound to taurine — preferred by cardiologists for patients with heart arrhythmias or cardiovascular concerns. Both magnesium and taurine have membrane-stabilizing effects on cardiac cells.

Why Spectrum 5’s Five-Form Combination Works

No single form covers all of magnesium’s physiological roles. Consider what you’d miss if you used only one form:
If You Only Took…You’d Miss
Glycinate onlyEnergy metabolism (malate), digestion (hydroxide), migraine prevention (oxide)
Citrate onlySleep/calm synergy (glycinate), energy/ATP (malate), digestion (hydroxide)
Oxide onlyHigh-bioavailability forms; significant portions would be poorly absorbed
Malate onlySleep support (glycinate), digestive support (hydroxide), mood (citrate)
Spectrum 5’s five-form blend is the rational solution — comprehensive coverage without requiring you to buy five separate products.
