What are VOCs, and where do they come from?
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases released from everyday sources: new furniture, carpets, paint, adhesives, cleaning products, air fresheners, and building materials — the “new” smell after a renovation is largely off-gassing VOCs. Common examples include formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene. VOCs can cause headaches, eye and throat irritation, and worsen asthma or chemical sensitivity. Why HEPA alone can’t remove VOCs
HEPA filters — even HEPA 14 — capture particles, not gases. VOCs are molecular gases far smaller than any particle a HEPA filter traps. Removing them requires adsorption onto activated carbon, where the gas molecules stick to the carbon’s vast internal surface area. That’s why a purifier for VOCs must have a genuine carbon stage, not just a HEPA filter. Why the AirPro works for VOCs and particles together
The AirPro runs a 3-stage system plus UV-C: a pre-filter for large debris, HEPA 14 for ultra-fine particles down to 0.1 microns, and activated carbon that adsorbs VOCs, formaldehyde, smoke, and household odors. So it handles both the gases carbon targets and the particles HEPA targets — useful during renovations, after new-furniture delivery, or in homes with strong cooking or chemical odors. See VOC & Formaldehyde Guide.Avoid “ozone” and “PCO” shortcuts
Some purifiers claim to “destroy” VOCs with ozone or photocatalytic oxidation (PCO). Ozone is a lung irritant and can itself create harmful byproducts. The AirPro is ozone-free — it uses mechanical filtration and carbon adsorption plus fully enclosed UV-C, with no ionizer. For chemical sensitivity, ozone-free is the safer choice.Getting the most VOC reduction
- Run the AirPro continuously during and after off-gassing events (new furniture, paint, flooring).
- Replace the filter on schedule — carbon becomes saturated over time and adsorbs less. The AirPro filter lasts 6-12 months; heavy VOC or smoke exposure shortens that. See Filter Replacement.
- Combine with ventilation: open windows when outdoor air is clean to flush out gases.
