I’m Getting Loose Stools or Digestive Discomfort

This is the most common side effect of magnesium supplementation and is usually dose-dependent. Fixes:
  • Take with food — taking magnesium on an empty stomach significantly increases GI sensitivity. Always take Spectrum 5 with a meal.
  • Start with 1 capsule — if you are new to magnesium supplementation, start with 1 capsule daily for the first week, then increase to the full 2-capsule serving.
  • Split the dose — take 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 capsule with dinner instead of both at once.
  • Give it time — digestive sensitivity often resolves within 1–2 weeks as your body adjusts.
Magnesium oxide is the form most associated with a laxative effect at high doses. Spectrum 5 uses oxide as one of five forms — at the blended dose, the contribution from oxide is moderated. If you remain sensitive, stick with the split-dose approach.

I’m Not Noticing Any Results

Timeline expectations:
  • Sleep improvement: Most people notice a difference within 1–2 weeks
  • Muscle cramp reduction: Often within 1 week
  • Stress and anxiety reduction: Typically 2–4 weeks
  • Energy and fatigue: 3–6 weeks of consistent daily use
Magnesium works by replenishing cellular stores — this takes time. Blood serum magnesium is only ~1% of total body magnesium; the rest is stored in bones and soft tissue. Stores deplete slowly and replenish slowly. If you see no improvement after 6 weeks:
  • Confirm you are taking 2 capsules (500mg) daily consistently
  • Make sure you are taking with food
  • Consider whether other factors (sleep hygiene, hydration, stress) are the primary driver of your symptoms

The Capsules Are Hard to Swallow

  • Take with a full glass of water
  • Try taking with food — the swallowing reflex is stronger when eating
  • You can open the capsule and mix the powder into a smoothie or yogurt — the taste is mild and earthy

Can I Take More Than 2 Capsules?

The recommended dose is 2 capsules (500mg) daily. The NIH Tolerable Upper Intake Level for supplemental magnesium is 350mg/day (from supplements, not including dietary magnesium). Spectrum 5 at 500mg exceeds this threshold. The UL is set based on laxative effects at high doses — not toxicity. Many adults tolerate doses above 350mg without issue. However, do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting your physician, particularly if you have kidney disease.

I Have Kidney Disease — Can I Take Spectrum 5?

Consult your physician before use. People with kidney disease or impaired renal function may not excrete excess magnesium efficiently, which can lead to elevated serum magnesium levels (hypermagnesemia). Spectrum 5 is not recommended for people with significant kidney impairment without medical supervision.

Spectrum 5 Interacts with My Medication

Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of certain medications. Take Spectrum 5 at least 2 hours apart from:
  • Antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones)
  • Bisphosphonates (osteoporosis medications)
  • Thyroid medications (levothyroxine)
Magnesium may also enhance the effects of:
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Blood pressure medications (mild potentiation)
Always inform your physician about all supplements you are taking.

The Capsules Have an Unusual Smell

Magnesium supplements — particularly blends containing oxide and hydroxide — can have a mild mineral or earthy smell. This is normal and not a sign of spoilage. Spectrum 5 does not contain artificial fragrances.
