The SonoHealth MistPro Portable Mesh Nebulizer is FDA approved — meaning it has received authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be marketed and sold as a medical device in the United States.

Why FDA Status Matters for Nebulizers

A nebulizer is a medical device. When a nebulizer is used to deliver prescribed medication — albuterol, ipratropium, budesonide, saline, and others — the device is part of the drug delivery pathway. The efficiency, particle size, and safety of the device directly affect:
  • Whether the correct drug dose reaches the lungs
  • Whether unintended contamination occurs
  • Whether the device performs consistently over time
An FDA-authorized nebulizer must meet safety standards for:
  • Electrical safety (IEC 60601 standard for medical electrical equipment)
  • Biocompatibility of patient-contact materials
  • Performance — particle size, nebulization rate, residual volume
  • Labeling accuracy — claims must be supported by testing data
A non-FDA-authorized nebulizer carries none of these assurances.

How to Verify FDA Status

FDA clearance and approval records are publicly searchable at fda.gov. Nebulizers are listed in the FDA’s 510(k) database (cleared devices) or the PMA (approved devices) database. Consumers can search for any device by manufacturer name or product type to verify authorization. Purchasing a nebulizer with confirmed FDA status ensures you are using a regulated medical device — particularly important when delivering prescribed medications that have been approved for nebulization at specific doses.

The Problem with Uncleared Nebulizers

The nebulizer market includes a large volume of imported, unregulated mesh nebulizers sold on Amazon and other retail channels. These devices:
  • Have not been reviewed by the FDA
  • Have no verified particle size specification
  • May be manufactured with materials not tested for biocompatibility
  • Cannot legally make medical claims under US law
  • Carry no accountability for adverse events
At $20–40, these devices may seem cost-effective. However, for patients using prescribed medications, an imprecise particle size can mean medication deposits in the wrong part of the airway — reducing efficacy and potentially increasing systemic absorption of locally-intended drugs.

The MistPro does not include medication. Medication for nebulization (albuterol, ipratropium, budesonide, etc.) requires a prescription from your healthcare provider. Saline solution for inhalation is available over the counter on Amazon.
