# Zeolite vs. Bentonite Clay: Which Detox Binder Is Right for You?

> How clinoptilolite zeolite and bentonite clay compare as gut-level detox binders — structure, how they work, tolerability, and how to choose.

Zeolite and bentonite clay are both natural mineral binders used to support the body's normal detoxification in the digestive tract, but they differ in structure and feel: **clinoptilolite zeolite** is a rigid, porous, negatively charged "cage" mineral, while **bentonite** is a soft, swelling clay. Neither one "removes toxins from your body" the way some marketing claims — both simply act as gut-level binders.

This page is educational and not medical advice. Binders support your body's natural elimination pathways; they are not treatments for microplastic exposure, mold illness, heavy-metal toxicity, or any disease. If you have a specific health concern, see a clinician. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.

## Quick comparison

| Feature | Clinoptilolite zeolite | Bentonite clay |
| ------------------ | --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- |
| What it is | Porous volcanic aluminosilicate mineral | Swelling clay (montmorillonite) |
| Structure | Rigid, cage-like, negatively charged | Expands and gels with water |
| Binding style | Relatively selective, gut-level | Broad, absorbent, gut-level |
| Typical format | Liquid drops, capsules, powder | Powder, capsules |
| Daily-use feel | Gentle; easy liquid dosing | Can be constipating if under-hydrated |
| Evidence in humans | Limited but studied | Limited |

## How each one works

Both are **gut-level binders** — they attach to certain compounds in the digestive tract so those leave in stool rather than being reabsorbed. Zeolite's crystal framework carries a negative charge that traps positively charged compounds in a fairly selective way. Bentonite is a swelling clay with a large surface area that absorbs broadly as it gels with water. Because both work in the gut and are not meaningfully absorbed into the bloodstream, credible products describe them as *supporting* natural detox pathways, not as a systemic or "cellular" detox.

## Tolerability and safety

Both are generally well tolerated, and both can cause constipation if you don't drink enough water. With any mineral binder, choose a **third-party-tested** product (natural clays and zeolites can carry trace lead and other metals), take it **at least 2 hours apart from medications**, and stay hydrated. Talk to your clinician if you're pregnant, nursing, on medication, or managing a health condition.

## Which should you choose?

* Want a **selective, gentle daily** binder in easy liquid form? Clinoptilolite zeolite fits well.
* Prefer a **traditional absorbent clay**? Bentonite, used with plenty of water.

There's no universal "best" — it comes down to format preference, tolerance, and product quality. Whatever you pick, verify third-party testing and keep it away from meals and medications.

## Why Plastiq Off uses zeolite + B12

[Plastiq Off](/plastiq-off/overview) uses **micronized clinoptilolite zeolite** for gentle daily detox-pathway support and adds **200 mcg of active B12 (methylcobalamin)** for everyday energy — a combination most single-binder clay or zeolite products don't offer. The zeolite is made in the USA and third-party tested.
