# Microplastics and Heart Health: What the Research Shows

> An evidence-based look at microplastics and cardiovascular health — including the 2024 study that found plastic particles in arterial plaque — and practical ways to reduce exposure.

Researchers have begun finding micro- and nanoplastics inside human blood vessels, and a widely-cited 2024 study reported that patients with plastic particles in their arterial plaque had a higher rate of heart attack, stroke, or death over follow-up. Importantly, this shows an **association, not proof that plastics caused those events** — the science is early, and the most practical response is to reduce everyday exposure and manage your known heart-health risk factors with your clinician.

## What did the 2024 study actually find?

A study published in the *New England Journal of Medicine* in 2024 examined plaque removed from the carotid arteries of patients. In roughly half the samples, researchers detected micro- and nanoplastics such as polyethylene. Over about three years of follow-up, patients with plastics in their plaque had a higher rate of a combined outcome of heart attack, stroke, or death than those without.

The authors were careful to note the limits: this is an **observational finding**. It cannot prove the plastics caused the events, other factors could be involved, and it doesn't yet tell us whether reducing exposure changes outcomes. It's a signal worth taking seriously, not a settled conclusion.

## Why might plastics matter for blood vessels?

The leading hypothesis is **inflammation**. Foreign particles lodged in tissue can trigger low-grade inflammatory responses, and inflammation is already understood to play a role in atherosclerosis (plaque buildup). Some plastics also carry chemical additives — such as certain phthalates and bisphenols — that can act as endocrine disruptors. All of this is under active study and not yet conclusive for microplastics specifically.

## How do microplastics get into the bloodstream?

We take particles in mainly through **food, water, and air**. From the gut and lungs, the smallest particles (nanoplastics) may cross into circulation. ## What can you actually do?

The strongest levers are about **reducing new exposure** and supporting overall heart health:

* Keep up the basics that protect your heart: not smoking, staying active, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, and eating fiber-rich whole foods.
* Stay hydrated to support your body's normal elimination pathways.
