# Common Nebulizer Side Effects: What's Normal and What's Not

> What to expect during and after a nebulizer treatment, which side effects are common and harmless, and the warning signs that mean you should call a doctor.

Most nebulizer treatments are smooth, but it's normal to notice a few mild effects — many of which come from the medication rather than the device itself. Knowing what's typical helps you stay calm and recognize the rare signs that need attention.

<Warning>
  Side effects depend mostly on the medication you use, not the nebulizer. Always use medication exactly as prescribed, and seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or any reaction that frightens you.
</Warning>

## Common, usually harmless effects

* **A brief increase in coughing** as the [mist reaches your airways](/nebulizer/how-it-works) and loosens mucus — it often settles within a minute or two.
* **A mild taste** of the medication or saline.
* **Cool mist or slight residue** on the face when using a mask — this is normal.
* **Mild shakiness or a faster heartbeat** with bronchodilators like albuterol, which typically passes quickly.

## Effects tied to specific medications

Bronchodilators (such as albuterol) can cause jitteriness, a faster pulse, or restlessness. Inhaled steroids (such as budesonide) can occasionally cause a hoarse voice or oral thrush — **rinsing your mouth after a steroid treatment** helps prevent this. Discuss any bothersome effect with the prescriber rather than stopping on your own.

## How to reduce side effects

Sit upright, breathe slowly and steadily, and keep treatments to the prescribed dose and frequency. Clean the device per the [cleaning guide](/nebulizer/cleaning-guide) so residue and bacteria don't build up. If a mask irritates the skin, make sure it fits well and wipe the face afterward.

## When to call a doctor

Contact your doctor if you notice a pounding or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, worsening wheeze or breathlessness during treatment, or symptoms that aren't improving as expected. Treat severe breathing difficulty as an emergency and call 911.

## Is the nebulizer itself ever the problem?

Rarely. If mist output is weak, the device sputters, or treatments take much longer than usual, it's usually a cleaning or hardware issue — see [troubleshooting](/nebulizer/troubleshooting) — not a side effect. The SonoHealth [MistPro](/nebulizer/overview) is backed by a 2-year warranty and [60-day guarantee](/nebulizer/guarantee).
