# Spectrum 5 Safety Profile — Side Effects, Interactions & Contraindications

> Spectrum 5 Magnesium is well-tolerated by most adults. Learn about potential side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, and who should consult a doctor before use.

Magnesium supplementation has an excellent safety record and is one of the most well-tolerated supplements in clinical use. Spectrum 5 is specifically formulated to minimize common side effects through careful form selection and formulation.

## Common Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects of magnesium supplementation are gastrointestinal:

| Side Effect             | Likelihood with Spectrum 5 | Notes                                                    |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Loose stools / diarrhea | Low to moderate | More common at doses >500mg, especially on empty stomach |
| Abdominal cramping | Low | Reduced by taking with food |
| Nausea                  | Low                        | Usually dose-dependent; take with food                   |
| Headache | Rare | Typically transient in first days |

Spectrum 5's multi-form formula is designed to reduce GI side effects. High-absorbability forms like glycinate and malate are gentler on the digestive tract than the mineral alone or lower-quality forms. The inclusion of magnesium hydroxide provides controlled bowel support rather than osmotic diarrhea seen with large doses of oxide or sulfate alone.

**Reducing GI sensitivity:**

* Always take with food
* If 2 capsules causes sensitivity, try 1 capsule twice daily (split dose)
* Start with 1 capsule daily for the first week, then increase to 2

## Serious Adverse Effects (Rare at Normal Doses)

**Hypermagnesemia** (excess magnesium in the blood) is extremely rare in people with normal kidney function, because the kidneys efficiently excrete excess magnesium. At very high doses (beyond 5,000mg/day), symptoms can include:

* Profound muscle weakness
* Low blood pressure
* Cardiac arrhythmia
* Respiratory depression

These effects are not expected at the 500mg dose in Spectrum 5 and have not been reported by verified customers.

## Drug Interactions

Magnesium can interact with certain medications:

| Medication Class                        | Interaction                               | Recommendation                                              |
| --------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Antibiotics (quinolones, tetracyclines) | Mg binds antibiotics, reducing absorption | Take Spectrum 5 at least 2 hours before or after antibiotic |
| Bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis) | Same binding issue | Separate doses by 2+ hours |
| Diuretics (loop/thiazide) | Some increase Mg excretion | Supplementation may actually be beneficial; inform doctor |
| PPIs (omeprazole) | Long-term use depletes Mg | Supplementation often recommended by doctors |
| Calcium supplements | Compete for absorption | Take at different times if taking both |
| Blood pressure medications | Mg may have additive effect | Monitor BP; inform prescriber |
| Diabetes medications | Mg may improve insulin sensitivity | Monitor blood glucose |

## Contraindications

**Do not use Spectrum 5 without medical supervision if you have:**

* **Kidney disease** (CKD stage 3+) — Impaired kidneys cannot excrete excess magnesium
* **Heart block** — Magnesium affects cardiac conduction
* **Myasthenia gravis** — Magnesium may worsen neuromuscular blockade
* **Bowel obstruction** — Magnesium hydroxide component is contraindicated

**Use with caution if you:**

* Are pregnant (consult your OB/GYN — magnesium has evidence-based uses in pregnancy but requires medical oversight)
* Are taking multiple medications (review the interaction table above)
* Have a history of irregular heartbeat

## Spectrum 5's Formulation Choices That Improve Safety

SonoHealth made several deliberate formulation decisions to minimize adverse effects:

1. **No magnesium stearate** — Eliminates a potential absorption inhibitor
2. **Hypromellose capsule** — Dissolves more gently than gelatin, reducing GI irritation
3. **Five-form blend** — Distributes the magnesium load across multiple absorption mechanisms, reducing the osmotic burden on the intestine that causes diarrhea with single-form oxide products
4. **Rice flour excipient** — Inert, gentle, unlikely to cause reactions

## Customer Safety Reports
