# Air Purifier vs. Dehumidifier: Which Do You Need for Mold and Musty Smells?

They solve two different problems, so the honest answer is often "both." A **dehumidifier removes moisture** from the air to lower humidity and discourage mold from *growing*, while an **air purifier removes particles** — including the mold spores, dust, and musty odor molecules already floating in the air. ## What does a dehumidifier do?

A dehumidifier pulls water vapor out of the air and collects it, lowering the room's relative humidity. A dehumidifier does **not** filter particles or capture spores that are already airborne — it only manages moisture.

## For mold and musty smells, which comes first?

Do both, in this order: **fix the moisture, then clean the air.**

1. **Find and stop the water source** — leaks, poor ventilation, or high humidity. Airborne particle removal can't fix a wet wall.
2. **Run a dehumidifier** in the damp space to hold humidity at 30–50%.
